Hypnotherapy for Social Phobia

Social Phobia is also known as Social Anxiety Disorder and causes the sufferer to feel an intense fear in social situations. This fear or anxiety can become so severe that it can impair their ability to lead a normal life. Social Anxiety Disorder can be categorized as specific where only certain situations create or trigger the problem, or it can be generalized when many different situations create the problem. It is estimated that up to 7% of the population suffers from some form of social anxiety disorder.

Generalised Social Phobia – Is a chronic, persistent or intense fear of being judged by others or alternatively being embarrassed or humiliated by their own actions.

Specific Social Phobia – Is when the intense anxiety or fear of doing something embarrassing only happens in very specific situations.

My clients who suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder will consistently feel self conscious and will constantly be worrying about what could go wrong. If for example they are due to give a presentation at work they will tend to worry weeks before the event about all the possible errors that they could make during the talk. When they finally stand up to make the presentation they may stumble over a word and this will then haunt them as it does not meet their high performance standards. That one mistake will not just be reviewed for a couple of days but for possibly weeks and months afterwards.

When this self critical behaviour or worry about humiliation becomes too overwhelming for the client they then start to try and avoid social situations which can begin to create a sense of isolation. They may for example begin to avoid meetings, parties, shopping, dating or even work. In extreme situations this isolating behaviour can lead to low self-esteem and depression.

Overcome Social Phobia with Hypnosis

At Balance Hypnosis London we will work with you so that you can start to take back control. In particular our social anxiety program will target the emotions and fears that are causing you problems and begin to neutralise them so that you feel more relaxed and less anxious.

One of the most important initial steps is to teach you self hypnosis for relaxation and calm which you can then practice at home. We can also anchor this state so that those feelings of tranquility and well being can be triggered when you are in everyday situations which previously would have made you fearful. Our hypnotherapy treatment plan will also include confidence boosting and ego-strengthening which will have an impact on your self-esteem.

Finally the positive affirmations and suggestions during your hypnotherapy sessions are targeted so that you start to think about your situation in a different way. This allows your subconscious to react with feelings of wellbeing and positivity. In many cases timeline techniques will also allow us to identify the cause of the anxiety and neutralise it so that is no longer has any impact. This will then allow us to install new positive behaviours and prevent old triggers from creating a problem.
